Diros Caves

Activity medium

Duration: 3½ hours

Take the opportunity to visit the enchanting subterranean labyrinth of the Diros Caves.

From Gythion, your scenic drive will head across the area known as the Mani. This rocky land, home to the proud Maniots, renowned for their hardiness and hospitality, is dotted with fortress-like towers and high mountain villages.

The Diros Caves are a miracle of nature descending mysteriously into the 'Underworld', a latticework of subterranean lakes and rivers leads you to caverns you would never have believed existed. From the entrance, skilful 'gondoliers' steer your little boats through a labyrinth of narrow passageways and around beautiful formations of stalactites and stalagmites. The fantastic colours and shadows, in the largest sea cave ever discovered, conjure up images of strange figures held together in a tight embrace.

At the Areopolis Village an array of stone houses with their enclosed courtyards gives the impression that Areopolis was, in bygone days, a heavily fortressed place in which to live - living up to the origins of its name Ares (Mars), God of War.

Essential information

This excursion will operate by coach, boat and on foot. The visit to Diros Caves involves around 20 steps to negotiate to and from the boat jetty, and a degree of agility is required when boarding the small boats. The caves have low ceilings and the lighting is dim. Flash photography is not permitted in the caves. The duration of the boat trip is approximately 20 minutes. This tour is not recommended for those with claustrophobia.

Mystical Mystras

Activity high

Duration: 4 hours

Mystras, the Byzantine Pompeii is a fascinating medieval city which saw the coronation of the last Byzantine Emperor.

The drive to the truly unique site of Mystras crosses luxuriant countryside, filled with orange, fig and mulberry trees and takes you through the modern town of Sparta. Although little remains of the ancient city, a stop will be made to pay homage to one of history's greatest heroes, Leonidas, the Spartan soldier king whose heroics at the battle of Thermopylae with his band of 300 warriors will remain as one of the most heroic battles in history.

This ancient city invites you to step back in time to the days of Byzantine Greece. Standing proudly atop Myzythra Hill is the fortress of Mystras, built by the Franks in 1249 and taken over by the Greeks; this was the cradle of the last dynasty of Byzantine emperors. Wander the now deserted and eerie streets of this once invincible fortress, stopping off at Metropolis, from where there are spectacular views. A visit to St Demetrius Cathedral with its 5 domes and rare wall paintings of the Byzantine renaissance is sure to remain in your memory.

This excursion will operate by coach and on foot. The journey to Mystras is around 1 hour each way. The city is built on a hillside and consists of inclines and steps. There are slippery surfaces within the site and extra caution should be taken. The visit is around 1½ hours, all of which is spent on foot. Flat, non-slip shoes are essential.
