Visually stunning, Sardinia's capital and main cruise port Cagliari can trace its history back thousands of years to Roman times and features many museums, historic churches and ancient artefacts.

Most of the city's impressive attractions can be seen just by walking through the walled Castello area with its winding alleyways and open piazzas. Do not miss the 2nd Century Roman amphitheatre and the colourful botanical gardens featuring 500 different plants.

There is a lively covered market every weekday and Saturdays just north of the Castello and you will be spoilt for choice with restaurants in the marina area, with fish and seafood a speciality.  There are numerous bars, pizzerias, and ice cream stalls along the seafront.

While, for pure relaxation, search out the superb sandy beaches in Poetto, just 15 minutes from the city.

Laze on a pristine beach, or swim out to explore an idyllic islet, or both!

After a scenic 90 minute drive from Cagliari, you’ll reach the reach the glorious beach of Tuerredda. It’s situated in a breathtaking inlet between Capo Malfatano and Capo Spartivento, and is widely considered to be one of Sardinia’s most beautiful beaches. When you first spot its fine, light-coloured sand and transparent waters, you’ll soon see why. Some say it’s reminiscent of a typical Caribbean beachscapes. The scene from the beach itself, looking out over the water is truly amazing. Taking centre-stage is the charming islet of Tuerredda, just a few hundred metres from the beach.

If you’re a strong swimmer, why not swim out to the islet and stretch out on its warm sands or soak up some sun on its smooth rocks. If you venture inland you’ll discover ground-hugging brush, home to seagulls and other birdlife. Swim back to the main beach and enjoy a refreshment or snack before heading back to the port.

This excursion will operate by coach and on foot. The journey to Tuerredda is 1½ hours each way. Please take protection from the sun, a towel and local currency. Sunbeds and umbrellas are NOT included but are available for rent locally. Please listen carefully to the guide for details of the pick up point and departure time. A visit to the ancient city of Nora is a must for those who enjoy delving into rich archaeological sites.

Enjoy a scenic drive through the town of Cagliari and up to Monte Urpinu. You’ll then continue along the south-western coast of Sardinia, the same route taken by thousands of pilgrims every year as they follow the Sant’Efisio Cart. You’ll pass the Santa Gilla Lagoon to glimpse the pink flamingos in the distance.

Founded under Carthaginian rule, the ancient city of Nora was built on a spit of land jutting out to sea. The town became the island’s most important city, a role it continued to enjoy under the Romans. Still partly submerged by the sea, the city was excavated at the beginning of the last century, revealing its ancient origins. Admire the 400 year old Spanish watchtower, the massive public bath system, splendid mosaics and a theatre almost intact after nearly 20 centuries. You’ll also have an opportunity to see the Roman Theatre and the Punic Temple of Ashmun.

After your visit to the archaeological site, you’ll have some free time to admire the coastal surroundings and beach. Relax and purchase a drink or an ice cream at the nearby café, before the return journey to Cagliari.

City of Cagliari

Discover the long and interesting history of the island’s capital city of Cagliari, one of Sardinia’s busiest ports.

Your tour begins with a drive up to Monte Urpinu. The view from here embraces the city and the harbour on one side and the saltworks and Poetto Beach on the other.

A visit to the Santa-Maria Cathedral will show you a combination of Pisan, Aragonese and Baroque features. 4 lions guard the entrance and the inside Baroque decoration consists of multi-coloured marble and fine sculptures.

Afterwards, you’ll have time to visit the National Archaeological Museum. This museum traces the history of Sardinia, with exhibits from the Neolithic, Phoenician and Roman periods. Look out for the fascinating statuettes from the Bronze Age, as well as jewellery, coloured glass heads and terracotta votive statuettes found at sites around Cagliari.

After your visit to the museum, you’ll have some free time in Via Roma to purchase a coffee or ice cream and browse for souvenirs of your visit to Sardinia.

This tour will operate by coach and on foot. This tour involves approximately 1½ to 2 hours’ walking over some cobbled and uneven surfaces, including steps and steep inclines. Modest dress is required when entering the Cathedral. Shorts are not acceptable. Passengers are reminded to take local currency to purchase drinks or to use the toilet facilities in the cafés. Shops and cafés may be closed in the afternoon and on Sundays.

See the beauty of Sardinia and spend your time sampling the wine and charms of island life.

Acquaint yourself with Sardinia on a short drive through the city of Cagliari to the Basilica of Bonaira, where a stop will be made at a vantage point to admire the view over Cagliari. Your guide will introduce you to their culture and the fascinating history of the church.

Continue onto Monte Urpino, for a brief photo opportunity commanding spectacular views of the Gulf of Angels, the salt ponds and the Molentargius Lagoon, a safe harbour to the splendid pink flamingos.

You’ll continue your drive to visit a local wine cellar for your wine tasting experience. Awaken your senses with a tasting of locally produced wines and sample a medley of delicious Sardinian cheese, salami, olives and bread.

Returning to Cagliari city centre, you’ll have approximately 45 minutes of free time to explore this bustling city, before returning to the ship.

Panoramic Cagliari & Cheese Demonstration

Take in the scenic views of Sardinia and learn how pecorino cheese is produced.

Enjoy a short orientation drive through the city of Cagliari, stopping at the Church of Bonaira, to learn about the history of the church and to admire the views over Cagliari from a vantage point.

Continue onto Monte Urpino, for a brief photo opportunity, commanding spectacular views of the Gulf of Angels, the salt ponds and the Molentargius Lagoon, a safe harbour to the splendid pink flamingos.

You’ll continue your drive crossing the Santa Gilla ponds and onto La Locanda di Baccalamanza, a stunning vineyard set in an estate stretching over 26 hectares with breathtaking views over the gulf of Cagliari. Upon arrival, a local shepherd will demonstrate how the famous pecorino cheese is produced.

During your visit, you’ll also be able to taste some other Sardinian specialities along with wine and water, before your leisurely drive back to Cagliari.
